Ignition repair

Ignition repair when the key won't turn

A key that will not turn, will not come out, or turns with nothing happening. Ignition problems are often mechanical, and many can be repaired without replacing every lock on the car.

Check these first

  • Steering lock. If the wheel was turned after the engine was switched off, the lock binds. Turn the wheel firmly both ways while gently turning the key.
  • Gear selector. Most automatics will not release the key unless the shifter is fully in Park.
  • Worn key. Try the spare. If the spare works, the problem is the key, not the ignition — a new key cut to code fixes it.
  • Battery. On some vehicles a dead battery prevents the key from being removed.

What ignition repair involves

When those checks fail, the usual cause is worn wafers inside the ignition cylinder — the key no longer lifts them to the right height. The cylinder can often be removed, repaired or replaced, and rekeyed to match your existing door key so you do not end up carrying two keys. A broken key inside the ignition can be extracted and a new key cut.

Never force a stuck key with pliers. That is how a repairable ignition becomes a broken key inside a damaged cylinder. And do not spray household oil into it — lubricants that attract dust make the problem worse over time; a dry graphite or lock-specific lubricant is the right product.

Push-to-start vehicles

Push-to-start vehicles have no ignition cylinder, but some use an electronic steering lock that can fail and prevent starting. That is a diagnostic job rather than a lock repair; describe the dashboard messages on the call and ask whether it is something a locksmith can address.

Car keys by make

Key types, immobilizer systems and all-keys-lost notes for each make. Call with the year and model to confirm what can be done for your vehicle.

Common questions

Why won't my key turn in the ignition?

The most common reasons are a bound steering lock, a shifter not fully in Park, or a worn key. Try turning the wheel while turning the key, check the shifter, and try your spare key.

Can a locksmith repair an ignition instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. Worn cylinders can frequently be repaired or rebuilt and keyed to your existing key.

My key is stuck in the ignition — can you remove it?

Yes. Don't force it with tools. Call with the year, make and model, and the key can be released or extracted without further damage in most cases.
