Why alignment matters more with a smart lock
A person turning a key will lift or push a door slightly without thinking about it. A motorized deadbolt cannot. If the bolt rubs the strike, the motor works harder, the batteries drain in weeks instead of months, and eventually the lock reports a jam. Seasonal movement makes this worse in the Chicago area: doors swell in humid summers and shrink in dry winters, so a strike that is barely aligned in July can bind in January.
Installation covers checking the door's fit, adjusting or replacing the strike so the bolt runs freely, then mounting, calibrating and testing the lock with you.
Choosing and setting up a smart lock
Popular models from brands like Schlage, Yale, Kwikset and August differ in how they connect (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or a hub), whether they keep a key cylinder as a backup, and whether they replace the whole deadbolt or attach to the inside of the existing one. Keep a working key or keypad override: batteries die, and cold weather shortens their life. You can supply your own lock or ask for one to be supplied. Will a smart lock fit my door?
Most fit a standard deadbolt bore. Very thick or thin doors, unusual backsets and storm doors close to the lock can cause problems — check the product's specifications against your door before buying.
What happens if the smart lock battery dies?
Most models warn you for weeks first. Choose one with a key cylinder or an external battery contact so a dead battery does not lock you out.
