Storefront lock repair

Storefront lock repair for aluminum and glass doors

Storefront doors take a beating: constant traffic, closers slamming them shut, and winter slush at the threshold. When the lock starts to stick or the hook bolt won't engage, it can usually be repaired rather than replaced.

How storefront locks fail

  • Key turns but the hook bolt doesn't move. A broken cylinder cam or a worn lock body.
  • Hook bolt won't engage the strike. The door has dropped on its pivots or the closer is slamming it out of line.
  • Key hard to turn. A dirty or worn mortise cylinder — common where doors face weather and salt.
  • Thumb turn or cylinder loose. The set screw or retaining ring has backed out.
  • Lock frozen. Meltwater from boots and salt runs down the stile and freezes inside the lock.

Repair first, then decide

Narrow-stile storefront locks are made in a few standard sizes, so worn lock bodies and cylinders can usually be serviced or swapped without changing the door. If the real problem is the door sagging or the closer, a new lock on a misaligned door will fail the same way — it is worth checking first. Cylinders can be rekeyed during a repair if keys have gone missing.

Common questions

Can you fix my storefront lock today?

In many cases common storefront cylinders and lock bodies can be serviced on site. If a part has to be ordered, ask how the door can be secured in the meantime.

Why does my storefront door only lock if I push it?

The door has likely sagged or the closer is not pulling it fully shut, so the hook bolt misses the strike. Adjustment often solves it.

Can you rekey the storefront cylinder too?

Yes. Mortise cylinders can be rekeyed during the repair visit.
