Smart key programming

Smart key programming for push-to-start vehicles

Proximity smart keys never leave your pocket, which is convenient until one is lost or the car says 'key not detected'. Here is how smart keys are programmed and what to check first. Call with the year and model to ask about yours.

How smart keys differ

A smart key talks to antennas around the vehicle, so the car knows when the key is close enough to unlock and start. Programming a new one means registering it with the vehicle's keyless or immobilizer module — on some vehicles quickly, on others only after a security PIN is retrieved or a timed relearn completes. Most smart keys also hide an emergency blade inside, which still needs to be cut to the door lock.

Because the procedure is model-specific, the year and model matter more than usual. Some later systems are dealer-restricted for certain years — ask on the phone whether yours is one of them.

'Key not detected' does not always mean a new key

  • Weak battery. The most common cause, especially in cold weather. Most vehicles let you start by holding the fob against the start button or placing it in a backup slot — if that works, try a battery first.
  • Interference. Phones, chargers and other fobs carried together can block the signal intermittently.
  • Damaged key. A drop or water can crack the antenna coil inside the fob.
  • Vehicle side. A failed antenna or module in the car produces the same message — and a new key will not fix it.

Car keys by make

Key types, immobilizer systems and all-keys-lost notes for each make. Call with the year and model to confirm what can be done for your vehicle.

Common questions

Can you program a smart key if I have no working key?

For many vehicles, yes, as an all-keys-lost job. Some take longer because of security procedures built into the car, and some are dealer-restricted. Call with the details to confirm.

My car says 'key not detected' — what should I try?

Hold the fob against the start button (or use the backup slot if your car has one) and try to start. If it starts, replace the fob battery before anything else.

Is there a physical key inside my smart key?

On most vehicles, yes. A release button frees an emergency blade that opens the driver's door when the fob battery is dead.
