Deadbolt installation

Deadbolt installation fitted to hold, not just to lock

A deadbolt is the lock that actually resists a forced door — when it is installed with a full-length bolt, a solid strike and screws that reach the framing. New installations and upgrades to existing ones.

What makes a deadbolt strong

Forced entries rarely defeat the lock itself — they split the door frame around the strike. The parts that matter most are the bolt throw (a full one-inch bolt), a reinforced strike plate, and screws long enough to bite into the wall framing behind the jamb rather than just the trim. A modest deadbolt installed that way resists more than an expensive one held in with short screws.

Deadbolts are installed in new bores on doors that lack one, or swapped into existing bores. Garage entry doors and back doors often have only a knob lock; they are usually the first place to add one.

Single or double cylinder?

A single-cylinder deadbolt has a key outside and a thumb turn inside. A double-cylinder deadbolt needs a key on both sides, which is sometimes chosen for doors next to glass. The trade-off is safety: in a fire, a double-cylinder lock without the key nearby can block the way out, and local codes may restrict them on certain doors. Check the rules that apply to your home, and weigh the pros and cons for your specific door before choosing.

Common questions

Can you add a deadbolt to a door that doesn't have one?

Yes, on most solid wood, fiberglass and steel doors. The door is bored and the edge mortised for the bolt, then the strike is fitted to the frame.

Can the new deadbolt match my existing key?

Usually, yes, if the keyways are compatible. Otherwise the new lock can be keyed to a new key and the others rekeyed to match.

Are double-cylinder deadbolts allowed?

Rules vary by municipality and door type, and they can block the way out in an emergency. Check local requirements before choosing one.
