How a car lockout is opened

Most modern vehicles are opened with an air wedge and a long-reach tool: the wedge creates a small gap at the top of the door frame, and the tool presses the unlock button or lifts the handle from inside. Some vehicles are better opened by decoding and turning the door lock with a specialized pick. Neither method involves a slim jim, which can tangle with airbag wiring and lock linkages inside modern doors.

If the keys are in the trunk and the vehicle has no interior trunk release, the door is opened first and the trunk released from the cabin or the fob. If there is no key at all — lost rather than locked inside — the job becomes car key replacement, and that is a different conversation.

Situations we hear about most

  • Keys left in a running car at a gas station, a daycare drop-off or a driveway on a cold morning
  • A push-to-start vehicle that locked itself with the fob inside
  • Keys dropped in the trunk while loading groceries or luggage
  • A commuter car in a Metra lot, with the keys inside and the train already gone
  • A door lock frozen solid after freezing rain, with the key still on the ring

Car lockouts around Buffalo Grove

Many car lockouts here happen in commuter and shopping lots. Metra's North Central Service stops at Buffalo Grove, Prairie View, Vernon Hills, Wheeling and Prospect Heights; the Union Pacific Northwest line serves Arlington Heights, Palatine and Mount Prospect; and Deerfield and Northbrook are on the Milwaukee District North line. Retail lots around Randhurst Village in Mount Prospect and the Hawthorn Mall area in Vernon Hills, and the parking decks in downtown Arlington Heights, are the other usual places.

When you call, give the exact spot: the station or store, the row, and in a parking deck the level and the nearest stairwell or entrance.

Proof of ownership

Before or right after the vehicle is opened, expect to be asked for photo ID and something that ties you to the vehicle — the registration or insurance card (often in the glove box, which is why it can be checked once the door is open), a title, or a rental or lease agreement.

Before you call

Check every door, the tailgate and the trunk — one is often unlocked. If someone at home has a spare key, that may be quicker and cheaper than a lockout call. If you have roadside assistance through your insurer or auto club, it may cover lockouts. And if a child or a pet is inside in heat or cold, call 911 first.

Car keys by make

Key types, immobilizer systems and all-keys-lost notes for each make. Call with the year and model to confirm what can be done for your vehicle.

Common questions

I'm locked out of my car — what should I do first?

Check all the doors and the trunk, then think about who has a spare key. If neither works, call (312) 478-6125 with your location and the year, make and model. If a child or pet is inside and at risk, call 911 first.

Can you open my car without damaging it?

Lockouts are normally opened with air wedges, long-reach tools and lock picks designed to avoid damage. On some vehicles or already-damaged doors there can be a risk — ask about it before any work starts.

Can you open a car with keyless entry or push-to-start?

Yes — those vehicles are opened the same way, by reaching the interior unlock control. If the fob is inside, it works normally once the door is open.

What if I lost the key instead of locking it inside?

Then opening the door does not solve the problem. That is car key replacement or an all-keys-lost job, where a new key is cut and programmed to the vehicle. Call with the year, make and model and ask whether it can be done for your vehicle.
