Rekey, repair or replace?

Most home lock questions come down to one choice. Rekeying changes which key opens a lock without changing the hardware — the right answer after moving in or losing a key. Repair fixes a lock that sticks, binds or will not latch. Replacement makes sense when the hardware is worn out, damaged, or you want something different: a sturdier deadbolt, a smart lock, a keypad.

Ask which one fits your situation, and why, before any work is done. Rekeying a sound lock is almost always cheaper than replacing it.

Homes around Buffalo Grove

The northwest suburbs have a lot of townhome and condominium communities alongside single-family neighborhoods, and each comes with its own lock considerations. In associations, the exterior door hardware may be subject to rules about appearance, and some buildings control common-entry keys centrally — check before changing anything that faces a shared hallway. Garage entry doors are often overlooked; they deserve a deadbolt as much as the front door.

Winter matters too. Exterior locks take moisture, freeze-thaw cycles and road salt carried onto steps and porches. A lock that starts to feel gritty in the fall is easier to service before it seizes in January.

Common questions

Should I change my locks after moving into a new home?

Yes — you cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist. Rekeying the existing locks is usually the most economical way to do it.

Can you make all my door locks use one key?

Often, yes, if the locks share the same keyway — many Kwikset locks share one keyway, many Schlage locks another. Locks from different brands may need a cylinder change first.

Do you install locks I bought myself?

Yes. If you have already bought a deadbolt, smart lock or keypad lock, it can be installed and adjusted. Some products fit some doors poorly — mention the model on the call.
