Tesla keys and lockouts what a locksmith can and can't do

Teslas have no cut key and no conventional immobilizer, so most Tesla key problems are solved through the car, the app and Tesla itself. Here is how it works, and when calling a locksmith makes sense.

How Tesla immobilizers work

Tesla does not use a cut key or a conventional immobilizer. Model 3 and Model Y use a phone key and NFC key cards, with an optional fob; Model S and Model X use a fob along with the phone key. New keys are paired through the vehicle's own touchscreen, using a key that is already authorized.

Unlike every other make on this site, a new Tesla key is not cut or programmed with locksmith equipment — it is paired through the car using a key that is already authorized, or arranged through Tesla. Mr Locksmith is an independent locksmith and is not affiliated with Tesla.

Common Tesla key types

  • Key card
  • Phone key
  • Key fob

All keys lost on a Tesla

Tesla is the honest exception on this site. Because there is no mechanical key or traditional immobilizer, most Tesla key problems — lost cards, a new phone, no authorized key left — are resolved through the Tesla app, your Tesla account and Tesla service rather than by a locksmith.

Worth knowing

Keep a key card in your wallet, not in the car. Phone keys fail when the phone battery does — and phone batteries drain fast in an Illinois winter — which is the most common way Tesla owners end up locked out.

Locked out of a Tesla

If you're locked out of a Tesla, try the Tesla app from another phone signed in to your account first, or a key card if you carry one. Tesla Roadside is the usual next step for lockouts with no working key.

Before you call about a Tesla key

  • The year, model and trim of your Tesla
  • The VIN — visible through the windshield on the driver's side, or on the registration
  • Whether any working key or fob still exists
  • Where the vehicle is: driveway, street, parking garage level or commuter lot

When the technician arrives, expect to be asked for photo ID and proof of ownership — the registration, the title, or a lease or financing agreement in your name.

Common questions

Can a locksmith make a new Tesla key?

Generally no. Tesla key cards, phone keys and fobs are paired through the vehicle with an existing authorized key, or through Tesla service if none is left.

I'm locked out of my Tesla — what should I try first?

Open the Tesla app on another phone signed in to your account, or use a key card if you carry one. If neither is possible, contact Tesla Roadside through the app or Tesla's support line.

My Tesla key fob battery died — how do I start the car?

With a dead phone or no phone, tap the key card on the reader on the driver's-side door pillar (Model 3 and Model Y) to unlock, then place it on the card reader in the center console to drive. Model S and Model X fobs have a backup spot described in the owner's manual.

What does adding a spare Tesla key involve?

New Tesla key cards, fobs and phone keys are paired from the touchscreen (Controls > Locks), and pairing requires an already-authorized key card. Additional cards and fobs are bought from Tesla.
