Panic bar repair
Panic bar repair so the door latches and still lets people out
A panic bar — also called a push bar or crash bar — has two jobs: keep the door latched, and release it instantly with a push from inside. When it does neither reliably, it needs attention quickly.

Common panic bar problems
- Door doesn't latch when it closes. The latch or strike is out of adjustment, or the door has dropped.
- Bar sticks or is hard to push. Worn internal springs or a binding latch mechanism.
- Vertical rods dragging. On double doors, top and bottom rods wear or bend, and bottom latches collect grit and salt.
- Dogging not holding. The feature that keeps the bar depressed during business hours has worn out.
- Outside trim or cylinder not working. The exterior handle or key no longer retracts the latch.
Life-safety hardware comes first
Exit devices exist so people can get out in an emergency. A repair must never leave a bar that fails to release, and a door should never be chained, padlocked or blocked to make up for a faulty latch. Where exit devices are required, and how they must perform, is set by your local fire and building codes and enforced by your local code official or fire department. Mr Locksmith repairs and adjusts the device you have; questions about what the code requires for your occupancy belong with that authority.

Common questions
Why won't my panic bar door latch?
Usually the door has sagged or the latch or strike has worn out of adjustment. Adjustment or a latch replacement normally fixes it.
Can a panic bar be repaired or does it need replacing?
Many can be repaired with springs, latches or rod adjustments. Badly damaged or obsolete devices may need replacement.
Is it okay to lock a panic bar door with a chain at night?
No. Exit doors must allow people out. If security is the concern, the right fix is a properly working device, not a chain.
