Car key replacement
Car key replacement cutting and programming explained
A lost car key, a key that is wearing out, or a second key you have been meaning to get. A modern car key has to be cut and programmed — here is what that involves. Call with the year, make and model to ask whether Mr Locksmith can do yours.

The two halves of a car key
The blade opens the doors and turns the ignition. It is cut either by duplicating an existing key or from the vehicle's key code, and modern high-security (laser-cut or sidewinder) blades need a dedicated cutting machine rather than a hardware-store duplicator.
The transponder chip is what lets the engine run. A key with a correctly cut blade but an unprogrammed chip will open the door and turn the ignition, and the engine will start and immediately stall — or not crank at all. Programming registers the chip with the vehicle's immobilizer, and on most vehicles that is done through the diagnostic port with specialized equipment.
Spare key now or all keys lost later
If you are down to one working key, a spare key is the most cost-effective thing you can do for that car. Copying a working key is simpler than originating a key when every key is gone, and on some vehicles adding a key requires an existing working one. Key duplication for a transponder car still involves programming — the cheap copy from a kiosk usually starts nothing.
Proof of ownership
A new car key is a key to someone's vehicle. Expect to be asked for photo ID and proof of ownership — registration, title, or a lease or financing agreement in your name. If the papers are locked in the car, the door can be opened first and the documents checked.
Car keys by make

Common questions
How much does car key replacement cost?
It depends on the vehicle, the key type (basic transponder, remote-head, flip or smart key) and whether any working key exists. Call with the year, make and model to ask about pricing.
Can you copy a car key from a picture or the code?
Keys are cut from the vehicle's key code or by decoding a lock, after ownership is verified. A photo of a key is not used to cut one.
Will a new key stop my old lost key from working?
On many vehicles the programming session can remove keys that are no longer in your possession. Ask about it on the call if your key was stolen.
